It is possible in New York for certain relatives to be paid as caregivers, but the rules are specific and the internet is full of oversimplified answers.
There are two broad routes. The first is becoming a certified HHA or PCA employed by an agency and assigned to cases, which may or may not include your relative depending on program rules.
The second is a consumer-directed program, where an eligible Medicaid consumer may select certain relatives or friends as personal assistants. Spouses and, in most cases, designated representatives are excluded.
Either route requires document review, health clearance, background screening where applicable, and training through an approved program.
